Town of New Windsor Press Releases

Senator Charles Schumer Holds Press Conference in New Windsor to Call on CSX to Make Critical Improvements to the Temple Hill Rd and Union Ave Railroad Crossings

On November 26, 2018, U.S. Senator for New York Charles Schumer stopped at New Windsor Town Hall to hold a press conference with New Windsor Officials and the media regarding CSX’s failure to implement critical repairs at two railroad crossings in the town. Town Supervisor George Green, Town Police Chief Robert Doss and NYS Assemblyman elect Colin Schmitt also participated in the press conference.

During the press conference, Senator Schumer demanded that CSX take immediate action in implementing a long-term solution for the hazardous railroad crossings. Senator Schumer first began to call on CSX to make these critical repairs at the New Windsor rail crossings in January of 2018 after being informed by New Windsor Officials that the crossings were unsafe and in a significant state of disrepair. New Windsor Officials explained to Senator Schumer that they had made several notifications to CSX over the past couple years about the problems but CSX Officials failed to take action. Even after Senator Schumer’s call to action earlier this year, CSX has failed to act and the rail crossings remain a significant safety and quality of life concern for motorists, business owners and emergency responders. Town Police continue to respond to reports of damaged vehicles at the crossings. Blown tires, damaged rims, and broken axels are not uncommon for motorists to experience as they drive over the poorly maintained rail crossings.

After the press conference, Senator Schumer, local officials and the media went to view the deteriorating rail crossing on Temple Hill Road (State Rt 300) near Old Temple Hill Road in Vails Gate.
