Today, with significant assistance from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), production of potable drinking water sourced from the Butterhill Wells has resumed, with the benefit of filtration through a newly constructed granular activated carbon filtration system (GAC system).

Testing of the filtered water has shown the GAC system is effectively and successfully reducing any PFOA/PFOS contamination to non-detect levels, as can be seen in the linked correspondence and chart of test results.

On August 13, 2019, after the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) installed a Granular Activated Carbon filtration system (“GAC system”) and with approval from the Orange County Department of Health (DOH), the Town of New Windsor placed Kroll Well back into service. Testing of the water filtered through the GAC system show it to be effective in filtering out the contamination that led to the well being taken off line. The Town will continue to operate and maintain the GAC system to filter the water from Kroll Well; and will see that monitoring and testing of the water, to ensure continued effectiveness of the GAC system, is conducted on a regular basis, as required by DOH. In addition to the water from Kroll Well, which is being distributed after filtration through the GAC system, the Town continues to supply water from the Catskill Aqueduct.
