25 August New Windsor P.D. Receives Implicit-Bias Awareness Training August 25, 2020 By Patrick Mangan General 0 The Town of New Windsor Police Department recently completed a training in the specialized area of implicit-bias awareness. This recently updated and state-of-the-art training, known as Fair and Impartial Policing was taught to all 50 sworn-members of the Police Department by an instructor from the nation’s #1 provider of this type of training. This very sought after training is currently being taught to police agencies of all types and sizes around the country, including many major cities. The training aims to educate Officers about how implicit biases can have negative consequences on an Officer’s perceptions and behavior as they do their job. This specific training curriculum is unique because it takes a science based approach to train Officers in the use of new skills that they can use to reduce and manage any biases that they may have. These same skills have been shown to promote working in a more safe, just and effective manner. Police Chief Robert Doss stated, “This training continues our ongoing commitment to serve the community in a courteous, impartial and fair way. There is simply no place for prejudice or discrimination in police work. While we already have written policies in place that directly reflect these fundamental principles, this training really took a hands-on approach to reinforce to us how some implicit biases can negatively impact even the most well-intentioned Officer’s actions. I am hopeful that this training helps build upon the exceptional level of trust that our community has graciously bestowed upon us over the years.” Photo: A group of Police Officers participate in the Fair and Impartial Policing training while practicing safe COVID-19 protocols. Completion of this highly competitive and lengthy 3 week course puts New Windsor at the forefront of combating driving while under the influence of drugs. Police Chief Robert Doss stated, “I am very proud of Officer Sussman and Officer Weed’s successful completion of the very challenging and difficult Drug Recognition Expert program. The deployment of these Officer’s with their knowledge, skill and expertise in the area of drugged driving detection will certainly increase the overall safety of the motorists traveling throughout the Town of New Windsor. The Police Department remains committed to keeping the roadways safe for everyone. We had 75 Driving While Intoxicated arrests in 2018 and we anticipate the numbers of impaired drivers on the roads to increase dramatically in the upcoming years because Governor Cuomo has committed to moving forward with his agenda of legalizing marihuana. The New Windsor Police Department intends to stay ahead of this problem and that is why we now employ 2 of the 7 DRE trained Police Officers in all of Orange County.” New Windsor cancelling outside group meetings in New Windsor owned buildings Supervisor Meyers and New Windsor staff attended a conference call with Orange County Officials today regarding the Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation. There are currently three confirmed cases in Orange County. Orange County is recommending all school districts close for two weeks, starting on Monday. For Orange County residents wanting to report cases of price gauging on supplies related to this situation, please contact the Orange County Consumer Affairs Office at (845) 360-6700. Effective immediately, all meetings for outside groups in New Windsor owned buildings are cancelled, including but not limited to senior citizen meetings, boy scouts, girl scouts, etc. Update from Supervisor Meyers on New Windsor precautions in response to the Coronavirus Pandemic Based on the recommendation of New York State that local governments have 50% of employees working remotely due to the spread of COVID-19, Supervisor Meyers is taking action for the health and safety of our employees and ensuring our government continues to function for New Windsor residents. Town Departments are having employees work from home or in split shifts where possible without affecting services to the public. The New Windsor Police and New Windsor Ambulance are taking extra precautions to protect their officers and staff. Additional precautions are being taken with our highway, water and sewer departments to ensure staff availability to run critical town infrastructure. Town Hall is still open to the public for the time being, however the Town is encouraging the public not to come to Town Hall or our Recreation department unless it absolutely necessary. Please conduct business via phone, email, online or via US mail where possible. New Windsor offers online utility bill payments, court fines and fees payments, online FOIL requests, online mapping, and more on our website at newwindsor-ny.gov. Above all, Supervisor Meyers would like to assure the public that even if Town Hall does close to the public, the New Windsor government will continue to function and provide all critical services to our residents. We will continue to provide residents and businesses with information as it becomes available. New Windsor Police Chief Graduates Prestigious FBI National Academy The Town of New Windsor Police Department is proud to announce that Chief Robert L. Doss has recently graduated from the 277th Session of the prestigious FBI National Academy. The 277th Session of the National Academy consisted of 256 men and women from all 50 states and 35 different countries. The FBI National Academy is our nation’s premier law enforcement leadership training institution that less than 1 percent of all Law Enforcement Officers in the United States ever get invited to attend. The National Academy is held at the FBI Training Academy in Quantico Virginia, the same facility where the FBI trains its new special agents and intelligence analysts. The 10-week National Academy program provides coursework in intelligence theory, terrorism and terrorist mindsets, management science, law, behavioral science, law enforcement communication, and forensic science. It serves to improve the administration of justice in police departments and agencies at home and abroad and to raise law enforcement standards, knowledge, and cooperation worldwide. National Academy students earn undergraduate and graduate credits from the University of Virginia, which accredits many of the courses offered. While FBI Director Christopher Wray delivered the keynote remarks at the graduation ceremony, FBI Academy instructors, special agents and other staff with advanced degrees provide the training. Chief Doss is a 22-year member of the New Windsor Police Department who worked his way up through the ranks to become Chief of Police in 2018. ****Pictured in the photo is FBI Director Christopher Wray (L) and Chief Robert Doss (R)**** Comments are closed.
