Receives Implicit-Bias Awareness Training August 25, 2020 By Patrick Mangan General 0 The Town of New Windsor Police Department recently completed a training in the specialized area of implicit-bias awareness. This recently updated and state-of-the-art training, known as Fair and Impartial Policing was taught to all 50 sworn-members of the Police Department by an instructor from the nation’s #1 provider of this type of training. This very sought after training is currently being taught to police agencies of all types and sizes around the country, including many major cities. The training aims to educate Officers about how implicit biases can have negative consequences on an Officer’s perceptions and behavior as they do their job. This specific training curriculum is unique because it takes a science based approach to train Officers in the use of new skills that they can use to reduce and manage any biases that they may have. These same skills have been shown to promote working in a more safe, just and effective manner. Police Chief Robert Doss stated, “This training continues our ongoing commitment to serve the community in a courteous, impartial and fair way. There is simply no place for prejudice or discrimination in police work. While we already have written policies in place that directly reflect these fundamental principles, this training really took a hands-on approach to reinforce to us how some implicit biases can negatively impact even the most well-intentioned Officer’s actions. Completion of this highly competitive and lengthy 3 week course puts New Windsor at the forefront of combating driving while under the influence of drugs. Police Chief Robert Doss stated, “I am very proud of Officer Sussman and Officer Weed’s successful completion of the very challenging and difficult Drug Recognition Expert program. The deployment of these Officer’s with their knowledge, skill and expertise in the area of drugged driving detection will certainly increase the overall safety of the motorists traveling throughout the Town of New Windsor. The Police Department remains committed to keeping the roadways safe for everyone. We had 75 Driving While Intoxicated arrests in 2018 and we anticipate the numbers of impaired drivers on the roads to increase dramatically in the upcoming years because Governor Cuomo has committed to moving forward with his agenda of legalizing marihuana. The New Windsor Police Department intends to stay ahead of this problem and that is why we now employ 2 of the 7 DRE trained Police Officers in all of Orange County.” New Windsor cancelling outside group meetings in New Windsor owned buildings Supervisor Meyers and New Windsor staff attended a conference call with Orange County Officials today regarding the Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation. There are currently three confirmed cases in Orange County. Orange County is recommending all school districts close for two weeks, starting on Monday. For Orange County residents wanting to report cases of price gauging on supplies related to this situation, please contact the Orange County Consumer Affairs Office at (845) 360-6700. Effective immediately, all meetings for outside groups in New Windsor owned buildings are cancelled, including but not limited to senior citizen meetings, boy scouts, girl scouts, etc. Town of New Windsor Cellular Service Survey The following message is from Town Supervisor Stephen A. Bedetti regarding cellular service concerns in the Town of New Windsor: Over the past several months, I have received numerous complaints from residents regarding poor cellular phone service throughout the Town of New Windsor. I have also personally experienced many of these same issues while traveling throughout our community, including dropped calls, areas with little or no signal, delayed text messages, and unreliable data service. It is clear that this is not an isolated problem, but one affecting many residents across our Town. I am currently preparing a formal request to Verizon to address these issues, and I would like to include as much real-world information as possible from our residents. If you have experienced problems with your cellular service in the Town of New Windsor, I ask that you please take a few moments to complete the survey using the link below. The survey will ask for: • Your cellular carrier (Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.) • The specific location where you experience issues. • The type of problem (dropped calls, no service, poor reception, slow data, delayed text messages, etc.). • Whether the issue is ongoing or occurs only at certain times of the day. If you experience service issues at more than one location, please complete a separate survey for each location. Submitting one response per location will help us accurately identify and map coverage gaps throughout the Town. Town of New Windsor Welcomes First-Ever Student Intern to the Supervisor’s Office NEW WINDSOR, NY — On Thursday, October 29, the Town of New Windsor Supervisor’s Office, led by Supervisor Stephen A. Bedetti, welcomed its first-ever student intern through a partnership with the Newburgh Enlarged City School District. Daniela Bustillo, a 12th-grade student at Newburgh Free Academy (NFA) West, has joined the Supervisor’s Office as part of an educational internship program designed to provide students with firsthand exposure to local government and public service. Daniela has expressed an interest in international relations, government and public service, diplomacy, and local community involvement. The internship will give her an opportunity to learn more about how municipal government operates, how local decisions are made, and how elected officials and town employees work together to serve residents. “When I was contacted by the Newburgh School District about this program, I immediately jumped at the opportunity,” said Supervisor Bedetti. “I believe it is important to get our young people involved in government and help them understand how local government works. These students are the future of our communities, and providing them with opportunities to learn about public service firsthand can make a lasting impression.” The internship will take place on Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. throughout the remainder of the school year. During that time, Daniela will gain insight into the daily responsibilities of the Supervisor’s Office and the many functions and services provided by the Town of New Windsor. At the conclusion of the program, Daniela will prepare a presentation for her teacher reflecting on her experience and what she has learned throughout the internship. “I am excited to be part of this program and look forward to seeing Daniela grow and learn during her time with us,” Bedetti added. “I am especially looking forward to her final presentation and hearing about her experience. I hope this opportunity gives her a better understanding of local government and encourages her to continue pursuing her interests in public service.” The Town of New Windsor is pleased to participate in this educational initiative and looks forward to continuing to provide opportunities for local students to learn about municipal government, community involvement, and the importance of public service.
